2010 Program Results
55 child care providers, impacting 450 children and their families in Cass and Clay counties, made changes in their child cares with the following results:
- 21.6% of children involved were overweight at the start of ChildcareAlive!; 20.6% were overweight after participating in the program; average BMI decreased by 5.33%
- Outdoor active play provided two or more times per day increased from 48.2% to 76.9%
- Staff who provided nutrition education for children one or more times per week increased from 29.1% to 50%
- Providers who incorporated more than 60 minutes of daily outdoor active play time for all toddlers increased from 37.5% to 66.6%
- Providers caring for toddlers and infants who had 0% television watching increased from 50% to 83.3%
- Providers who joined in active play time for toddlers increased from 66.6% to 91.6%
- Providers reporting that infants are rarely or never placed in a bouncy seat, swing, or play pen for more than 15 minutes at a time increased from 41.6% to 66.6%
- Providers indicated they were more knowledgeable about the importance of physical activity and outdoor play in child care and how to incorporate it in daily routines and about healthy food choices
- Providers increased the amount of outdoor time and are interested in more healthy living training
- Teacher-led physical activity two or more times per day increased from 13.7% to 38.4%
- Outdoor active play provided two or more times per day for all children increased from 48.2% to 76.9%
- Providers offering more high fiber, whole grain foods at least once per day increased from 39.7% to 69%
- Providers rarely or never offering sugary drinks other than 100% juice increased from 82.7% to 100%
- Fruit offered two or more times per day increased from 41.6% to 58.3%
- 53% of parents noticed a change in their child's food choices in reference to eating healthier snacks, meals or drinks
- 60% of parents noted a change in their child's behavior toward or increased interest in being more physically active
- 81% of parents reported an increase in the amount of time their child spends outdoors
- 25% of parents felt their child's sleeping improved
- 86% of parents felt that the program was beneficial to their family
- Families who eat five or more fruits and vegetables sevings per day increased from 35% to 50%
Areas for Improvement:- 48% of toddlers/infants watch television at least sometimes
- Guidelines provided to parents for food brought in for holidays/celebrations are not available (38%)
- Holidays are not "rarely or never" celebrated with mostly healthy foods or non-food items (30%)
- A written policy on nutrition and food services does not exist (46.1%)
- A written policy on physical activity does not exist (46.1%)
- Nutrition education is rarely or never provided for children through a standardized curriculum (61.5%)
