Healthy Snack List

The Institute of Medicine recommended snack nutrition standards for healthy eating includes:
  • No more than 35% of total calories from fat
  • Less than 10% of total calories from saturated fats
  • Zero trans fat
Exceptions include:
  • 100% vegetables and vegetable juices without added sugars
  • Unflavored nonfat and low-fat milk and yogurt, flavored non-fat and low-fat milk with no more than 22 grams of total sugars per 8-ounce serving, flavored nonfat and low-fat yogurt with no more than 30 grams of total sugars per 8-ounce serving
Foods and beverages should also be caffeine free, with the exception of trace amounts of naturally occurring caffeine-related substances.

This snack list, compiled by CCHPI interns/volunteers Kristy Singlestad, Devany Schulz, Natalie White, and Kaitlin Cannon, is based on adapted Institute of Medicine Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools. The list involved Hornbacher's, SunMart, Cashwise, Target, Walmart, Sam's Club, and Fleet Farm in Fargo-Moorhead.

INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE RECOMMENDED SNACK NUTRITION STANDARDS:

1) Snacks, foods, and beverages meet the following criteria for dietary fat per portion as packaged:
  • No more than 35% of total calories from fat
  • Less than 10% of total calories from saturated fats
  • Zero trans fat
Nuts and seeds are exempt from the total fat (<35%) standard. However, they must meet all other IOM standards, including saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium standards.

2) Snacks, foods, and beverages provide no more than 35% of calories from total sugars per portion as packaged.

Exceptions include:
  • 100% fruits and fruit juices in all forms without added sugars
  • 100% vegetables and vegetable juices without added sugars
  • Unflavored nonfat and low-fat milk and yogurt, flavored nonfat and low-fat milk with no more than 22 grams of total sugars per 8-ounce serving, flavored nonfat and low-fat yogurt with no more than 30 grams of total sugars per 8-ounce serving
3) Snack items are 200 calories or less per portion as packaged.

4) Snack items meet a sodium content limit of 200 mg or less per portion as packaged.

5) Foods and beverages are caffeine free, with the exception of trace amounts of naturally occurring caffeine-related substances.

Institute of Medicine Nutrition Standard Adaptations:

Caloric Content: Based on the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Competitive Foods Standards, snack items are not to exceed 150 calories for elementary students and 200 calories for middle and high school students.

"Cheese" exception: Based on State of Connecticut Competitive Foods Standards, any cheeses from reduced or no fat milk that meet all other IOM standards are exempt from the total fat (<35%) standard.
